Reliance Communication might enter the GSM market
Reliance Communication has announced that they are interested in entering the GSM mobile service market as the Defense authorities recently agreed to vacate 45 MHz quantity of spectrum. This extra spectrum would allow the government to let more mobile players enter the market leading to more competition for existing players.
Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communication has already approached the Indian government seeking approval for their entry into the GSM market. If their application is approved, they would immediately get a pair of 5 MHz of spectrum in 1800 MHz.
The company is already one of the leading providers of mobile services using the CDMA based technology. They have a subscriber base of nearly 20 million customers and GSM would enable them to target a broader market base.
The Reliance customers might end up getting features like switching from one technology service to another based on their requirement. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has confirmed that they have received the application from the company but have still not decided on approving this request.
