Unwiring Pune: Intel to help Pune become India’s first Wi-Fi enabled city

US based tech giants Intel has announced that they would be working towards making Pune the first Wi-Fi enabled city in India. They are the world’s largest maker of microprocessors for personal computers and the process to make Pune a Wi-Fi enabled city would begin within a years time.

This project is being called: Unwiring Pune and it would offer the citizens of the city internet access from anywhere in the city through a wireless device. WiMAX and Wi-Fi technologies would be used to make this possible.

Users would be able to use their PDAs and Laptops to access the internet wirelessly anywhere in the city. This project was announced by Pune Municipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer. This project would require providing Wi-Fi enabled internet access across an area of 400 sq km area.

It would cover Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and information technology pockets such as Hinjewadi. The initial investment in this project would be for around Rs. 7 crores.
