Airtel unlocking Apple iPhone 3G officially in India?

Airtel and Vodafone are the two mobile companies authorized to sell the iPhone in the Indian market.

The two companies have been selling the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models in the market for a while now.

And both of them are expected to launch the iPhone 4 sometime later this year.

The iPhones sold in the Indian market are locked to the carriers which prevent the users from using them with other mobile service providers.

There are no official guidelines in India on whether the carriers are supposed to unlock the devices after a particular time limit.

Since the iPhone is not sold subsidized in the market, the carrier does not really make a loss if the device is unlocked.

And we have just seen this interesting tweet that Airtel is indeed unlocking the iPhone 3G for some of their customers.

Thanks to #Airtel for unlocking my #iphone3G officially. Now I can use this in the US. :)less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone

We are looking into getting more details on this.

Update: You might want to try it out if your iPhone is more than one year old…
